Phyllis Meadows, PhD, MSN, RN
Senior Fellow—Health, The Kresge FoundationDr. Phyllis Meadows is a faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where her responsibilities include developing and teaching courses in public health administration and public health policy for the Department of Health Management and Policy, and overseeing leadership training for professionals in the practice of public health for the UM SPH Office of Public Health Practice. As a Senior Fellow – Health for the Kresge Foundation, Dr. Meadows is also designing a national initiative for community health centers.
With nearly 30 years professional work experience as a practitioner in public health, Dr. Meadows has demonstrated leadership in planning, development, financing, and policy. Most recently, she served as director and public health officer for the City of Detroit’s Department of Public Health and Wellness Promotion. Prior to that she spent a decade as a program director at the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, where she worked in the areas of youth, health, health policy, and education programming. Dr. Meadows joined the University of Michigan School of Public Health faculty in February 2009 as a clinical professor and associate director of public health practice. She holds both a bachelor’s and master of science degree in nursing and a PhD in sociology from Wayne State University. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Wayne State University School of Nursing Lifetime Achievement Award, the University of Michigan Distinguished Public Health Practitioner Award and the Michigan Department of Community Health Director’s Award for Innovation in Public Health.
