James R. Tallon, Jr.

President, United Hospital Fund

James R. Tallon is President of the United Hospital Fund, a research and philanthropic organization that works towards health care reform for the people of New York. He is a leader in health care policy and was a New York State Assemblyman for Binghamton and parts of Broome Country from 1975 to 1993. During his tenure, Mr. Tallon chaired the health committee for eight years, and was Majority leader from 1987 to 1993. In 1999, Empire States Reports name Mr. Tallon one of 25 leaders whose work yielded major improvements in the lives of New Yorkers over the prior quarter century.

Mr. Tallon is a member of the New York State Board of Regents, the supervisory body of all education and education-related activities in New York. He is a chair on the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, and is currently on the boards of the Alliance for Health Reform, The Commonwealth Fund, and the Institute of Medicine as a Profession. Mr. Tallon has held lecture appointments at Columbia University and Harvard University schools of public health.

Mr. Tallon earned his MA in International Relations from Boston University, and attended Syracuse University where he received his BA, cum laude, in Political Science. He participated in additional graduate work at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Mr. Tallon was awarded honorary doctorates of humane letters from the College of Medicine, School of Graduate Studies of SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, and New York Medical College. He is also an honorary fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
