Sandra Van Den Heuvel, MSN, RN

Marquette University
DNP Student

After obtaining an ADN in 1995, I joined St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee WI and gained valuable experience as a staff nurse in ICU and cardiac services. I continued my education, receiving a BSN in 2003 from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Realizing there was a need for patient care that extended outside of the hospital setting, I started my own healthcare business focusing on the needs of cancer patients in the community. The business won positive press from national and international media for healthcare innovation. After a number of successful years, I realized my passion for teaching and in 2010 received a MSN degree in nursing education from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee WI. Since then I have had the privilege of teaching nursing at Marquette University, served as program coordinator for the SOAR-RN program, a national rural nurse residency program, and co-authored professional development modules for the Wisconsin Nurse Residency Program (WNRP). Currently, I am the program manager for the Veterans Administration Nursing Academic Partnership (VANAP) through Marquette University and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee. I am actively involved with numerous veteran-centric quality improvement projects and initiatives, professional development programs for nursing staff and nursing educators, and overseeing the integration of veteran-centric content throughout the pre-licensure curriculum at Marquette's College of Nursing. My goal is to continue to create and implement professional and educational programs for VA nurses so they can continue to give the best care possible to our veterans.
