Kimberly Albero graduated from the University of Virginia in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy Nurse Corps and reported to Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. There, she spent three years caring for Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, and Airmen wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. She cared for patients with limb amputations, traumatic brain injury, and the neuropsychiatric sequelae of blast injury and combat trauma. She deployed aboard the USS Boxer to Central America to provide humanitarian and civic assistance during Operation Continuing Promise in 2008. In 2009, she moved to San Diego where she worked as a critical care nurse in a multiservice ICU. She deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as a flight nurse with First Medical Battalion in support of the United States Marines during Operation Enduring Freedom. She ended her active duty service as the manager of the Nurse Residency Program at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA and as the nurse manger of a Pediatric Primary Care Medical Home on Joint Expeditionary Base, Little Creek in Virginia Beach, VA. She now serves as a navy reservist and full time doctoral student, planning to complete her course of study as a Family Nurse Practitioner in May 2018. She hopes to continue to work with veterans and their family members as a nurse practitioner.
