Jonas V Nurse Leader Scholar

Shannon Morris, MSN, RN, CNM

Teachers College
EdD Student

Shannon is an EdD student at Teachers College, Columbia University studying nursing education. Born and raised in Marietta, Georgia, Shannon received her BA and MSN in Nurse-Midwifery from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She knew the minute she "caught" her first baby, there was nothing else she could ever do. After finishing her midwifery training at the University of Texas, Medical Branch, she joined Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center as a labor and delivery/mother-baby nurse, where she continues to care for patients of all backgrounds and acuity levels. She also serves as a preceptor for nursing students and new nurses in the labor and delivery setting as well as a unit leader in educating staff nurses on changes in hospital technology. Shannon's research interests include creating effective simulations for emergent situations in the obstetrical setting, the nursing role in high-risk pregnancy and delivery, and the transition from student nurse to nursing professional. After completing her EdD, Shannon is looking forward to serving the nursing profession as a faculty member specializing in maternal and neonatal nursing. She cannot wait to share with her students the honor and privilege it is to be a part of someone's very first birthday.
