I am an hematology-oncology nurse who started my career in hematology and bone marrow transplant. I have specialized in oncology through different nursing and leadership roles in Chicago and metro Detroit. I earned my MSN from Michigan State University in 2013 with a concentration in nursing education and as an adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist. I began teaching clinicals at an area community college and worked as a graduate assistant in a nursing workforce diversity program while earning my MSN. Upon graduation with my MSN, I started teaching for Michigan State University's College of Nursing where I teach clinical and didactic courses as well as participate in task forces and committees to continuously improve our program and outcomes. I also work as an oncology clinical nurse specialist on a medical-oncology unit in Detroit area. Teaching and oncology have continued to be my passion, and I feel blessed to facilitate the formation of new nurses and promote great nursing outcomes. I am currently finishing my first year at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the PhD program. My dissertation will be on predicting the causes of compassion fatigue in oncology nurses and identifying factors that promote professional quality of life in oncology nurses. I am interested in identifying those factors that promote professional quality of life that can be influenced by nursing leadership. This is an important first step to help oncology departments retain compassionate oncology nurses and promote positive outcomes for the patients and the nurses.
