Annie Rohan, BSN, MSN

Columbia University

Annie Rohan is a Nurse Practitioner and a native New Yorker who returns to Columbia University after a 17-year period in full-time nursing practice. She obtained a Master’s degree in Maternal-Child Health Nursing from CUSON in 1991, and holds certificates as a Nurse Practitioner in two specialties: Neonatology and Pediatrics. Ms. Rohan was employed as a Nurse Practitioner at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center (1992-1996), and later was the first Nurse Practitioner to obtain admitting privileges at Long Island Jewish Medical Center when working for a private pediatric neurosurgical practice. She is currently employed at Stony Brook University Hospital as a Senior Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. As a function of her role as a clinical preceptor for medical students, Annie holds a courtesy appointment as a Clinical Instructor for the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine at SUNY, Stony Brook. Her clinical expertise is in the resuscitation and stabilization of neonatal patients, with a specialty interest in high-risk populations, especially minorities, adolescent mothers, and survivors of extreme prematurity.

Ms. Rohan’s experience includes leadership in nursing care at the local, state and national levels. Noteworthy is her experience as an exam item writer for Nurse Practitioner certification organizations, her co-authorship on several clinical papers and case study reports published in both nursing and medical journals, and presentations of scholarly projects at regional sections of the Society for Pediatric Research and the March of Dimes. Her scholarly practice demonstrated significant benefit of proactive over reactive management approaches to neonatal intensive care. It is her goal in doctoral study to carry this approach over to maternal behaviors in vulnerable populations to achieve a benefit in birth outcome, parenting behaviors, and child development. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, several nursing specialty organizations, and has been invited as an affiliate member to the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is clear from her experiences that she has a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
