Jonas Scholar Alumni CommodoreYvonne Commodore-Mensah is originally a native of Ghana, West Africa. She came to the United States to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Nursing at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her Senior Thesis on “Fibromyalgia: The Effectiveness of Pharmacologic and Non-Pharmalogic Treatment and the Incidence of Childhood Sexual Trauma” stimulated her interest in research. Her experiences as a Student Nurse Extern on a cardiovascular intervention unit as well as her work as a Registered Nurse on a Cardiac Telemetry Unit generated her interest in Cardiovascular Disease Risk Management in under-served populations. The research-intensive PhD program in Nursing at Johns Hopkins University, which is also highly pedagogical, is molding her into a nurse scientist, educator and leader in global nursing. One of her life-long goals is to improve nursing education and nursing research in Sub-Saharan Africa and other developing countries.
