Sara AdamsSara Adams received her graduate degree from Valparaiso University, where she received the Graduate Faculty Academic Excellence Award and the Freda Scales Master of Science in Nursing Award for bold and innovative approaches to advanced nursing. During her graduate studies, she traveled with a service learning student group to Central America, specifically Costa Rica and Nicaragua, where the group visited various underserved areas to perform care. After graduation, Ms. Adams piloted and led a cultural immersion experience for nursing students to Santiago and Viña del Mar, Chile. The focus of the Chilean experience was on the public health system and the impact of culture on nursing care.

Ms. Adams has served as the Vice President of Sigma Theta Tau Zeta Epsilon Chapter, has been a faculty mentor to a nursing fellowship organization, and has served as a member of an undergraduate writing task force to enhance undergraduate writing skills in nursing. She is attending the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Nursing to pursue a PhD in Nursing Science and plans to be a faculty member at a college of nursing upon completion of her degree. Her research will examine the effect of using approaches from the humanities (poetry, creative writing, art and music) to increase students’ understanding of patients’ experiences with health and illness.
