Kathleen Hilton, DNP, RN, PHN

Samuel Merritt University

Embarking upon her career a decade ago, Dr. Kathleen Hilton's goal was to work in primary care practice with underserved patient populations to impact health disparities. As a current Family Nurse Practitioner student and Doctor of Nursing Practice candidate, she continues to draw from her professional nursing experiences as an RN working with diverse populations in an outpatient setting in Interventional Nephrology. Many patients require advocacy at every level of care, it is essential to build and sustain connections with stakeholders within the community in order to direct patients to effective healthcare outcomes. Dr. Hilton acknowledges her role within the healthcare community as a change agent in identifying and tackling perpetual structural violence that contributes to the inequity in quality healthcare access. Her interest in advocacy and participation in health policy has provided. She is the Shearer Student Fellowship Chapter Leader of the California Health Professional Student Alliance at Samuel Merritt. She attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Student Policy Summit this past March in Washington, D.C. with fellow nursing students from across the country, where she was exposed to the impact of policy engagement in the field of nursing. The experience inspired her to strengthen her dedication to health policy and patient advocacy as she progresses in her career in primary care.
