Jonas III Veterans Healthcare Scholar Alumni - Benjamin CanhaBenjamin Canha is currently a PhD student at the University of Maryland and is a Course Coordinator for Psychiatric Nursing at the University of Maryland School of Nursing at Shady Grove. Mr. Canha has extensive experience in mental health nursing, research and the care of veterans. As a Clinical Research Nurse at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland for more than 15 years, he conducted research and treatment for behavioral health disorders including alcoholism, schizophrenias, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders including PTSD, which are his current research areas of interest. Mr. Canha then became the Nurse Educator on Ward 54 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. There, he provided clinical expertise in addictions treatment and mental health nursing. Mr. Canha created and administered a 30-hour Substance Abuse Competency for army and civilian nurses and techs, and a 12-hour Nursing Mentorship and Education competency for army and civilian nurses. Mr. Canha also instituted and conducted a substance abuse program for soldiers, which included a lecture series and group and individual therapy, as well as 12-step program facilitation.
