Jonas Scholars Alumni BarnesAndrea M. Barnes' inspiration to enter nursing began when she observed the excellent nursing care of her grandmother. This nursing care made a difference in the healing and rapid return home of her grandmother.

Dr. Barnes is a stellar example of a true CUNY scholar. Beginning her nursing education at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), her first nursing position was at Bellevue Hospital Center in the Recovery Room. Soon after graduation from BMCC, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from State University of New York, Downstate in Brooklyn. Within two years, she enrolled at Hunter College, where she earned her Master’s in Nursing as a geriatric nurse practitioner. Since the completion of her Master’s education, Dr. Barnes has worked as a nurse practitioner at Beth Israel Hospital providing care to acutely ill geriatric patients, following them from admission to discharge. For the last eight years, she has practiced at the Brooklyn campus of the Veterans Administration, New York Harbor Health Care System.

Returning to her CUNY roots, Dr. Barnes serves as a preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students at Hunter College. As a preceptor, she is sought after by students who recognize her as a great teacher and committed professional. In addition she precepts PharmD and Dental Residents and provides the full range of care to veterans and active military personnel, most of whom are elderly.

Dr. Barnes’s outstanding clinical practice has been recognized through awards from Bellevue Hospital Center, as Nurse of the Year and for Excellence in Clinical Practice and by the nursing faculty at Hunter College for Academic and Clinical Excellence.

Dr. Barnes’ research and academic interests include factors that influence quality of life among elderly veterans.
