The Nurse Mentor Program 1) provides educational opportunities for masters prepared nurse managers at Brooklyn Hospital Center (BHC) to develop knowledge and skills to become expert clinical nursing educators, 2) provides Long Island University (LIU) School of Nursing with a pool of skilled clinical instructors for baccalaureate students rotating at BHC, and 3) enhances the clinical education and training of nursing students and increases recruitment and retention of baccalaureate prepared nurses to BHC.
The program recruits masters prepared nurse managers from BHC to participate, over one academic year, in a 12-credit nurse educator program to serve as clinical preceptors to baccalaureate nursing students. After completion of the nurse educator program, participating nurses serve as clinical nurse educators and provide clinical supervision to LIU nursing students. The BHC nurse managers benefit from the nurse educator program by advancing their educational skills in nursing. Additional benefits to BHC include the opportunity to recruit and retain baccalaureate prepared nurses.
Monitoring and evaluation include metrics on the recruitment and retention of student nurse participants as new graduate nurses to BHC, performance evaluation of clinical nurse instructors and perceptions of quality of nursing care.
