The Leadership Academy for Nurse Leaders aims to enhance leadership competency among nurses employed in Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) hospitals in New York City and increase nurse retention rates. The program will train 360 nurse participants over the three year grant period or 18 percent of the total number of the nurses employed by HHC. Each year, 120 nurses participate in a year-long intensive leadership and business skills building program. These nurses consist of one cohort of 60 nurses currently in leadership roles and a second cohort of 60 nurses identified as having potential for managerial positions.

HHC developed the Leadership Academy in collaboration with The Advisory Board Company, an organization that provides best practices research and analysis to the healthcare industry. Academic partners and HHC senior nursing leadership participated in a planning retreat to develop consensus on the curriculum. The Leadership Academy curriculum includes improving patient safety, nursing financial management, problem solving and innovation. All program participants complete a 360 degree assessment that serves as a basis to measure core competency as well as leadership improvements. HHC, together with their academic partners on the grant, developed a plan for monitoring and evaluating the program and will refine future Leadership Academy curricula as well as disseminate the grant program outcomes.
