The GAP Program aims to 1) increase the number of clinical nurse educators in clinical settings, 2) enhance clinical education and training of student nurses, and 3) improve retention of both new and experienced nurses in hospital settings.

Phase One of the GAP Program, the Nursing Preceptor/Clinical Faculty Development Education Program, is designed to increase the number of available clinical preceptor and adjunct faculty to expand the clinical educational experience for participating student nurses. The Nursing Preceptor/Clinical Faculty Development Education Program provides education to selected experienced clinical nurses in order for them to serve as preceptors and clinical adjunct faculty (if Masters prepared) to student nurses in clinical rotations. Participating clinical settings are: Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Jacobi Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospital, Queens, Long Beach Medical Center, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

Phase Two of the GAP Program, the Nursing Clinical Residency Match Program, aims to support the transition from nursing student to practicing professional by increasing students’ clinical exposure and strengthening enculturation into hospital practice settings. Student nurses are matched with clinical nurse preceptors and adjunct faculty who completed the Faculty Development Program in Phase One for clinical rotations. Where feasible, the GAP program matches student nurses to one hospital setting for all the students’ clinical hospital training experiences.

Monitoring and evaluation include both quantitative and qualitative data from surveys, evaluations and semi-structured interviews. Metrics include student nurse performance, student nurse satisfaction, nursing preceptor and adjunct clinical faculty perceptions of the program and recruitment and retention rates of new nurses as well as retention of experienced clinical preceptors and adjunct faculty participating in the program.
