Issues Challenging the Professional Nurse Workforce

Nurses constitute the largest sector of healthcare providers worldwide.  Their practice is essential to the health, safety and well-being of individuals as well as to the provision of healthcare services.  The growing gap between the supply of professional nurses and the mushrooming demand for nurses across settings constitutes a healthcare crisis.   In the U.S., the growing demand is fueled by increasing life expectancy; an aging baby boomer generation; increased patient acuity; rising prevalence of chronic illnesses, and the impact of technologies.  Currently, of the 2.9 million licensed registered professional nurses in the U.S., 2.4 million nurses report practicing nursing or working in a nursing related area (HRSA, 2007).  By 2020, best estimates project a short-fall of one million professional nurses in the US, one-third of the projected demand.  The nurse shortage varies by locale. It knows neither local nor national borders; it is a global crisis.
